NEW LAUNCH: Conference Bursary

By | Research | No Comments

We are delighted to announce the introduction of a conference bursary for 2017.

In addition to funding Summer Studentships for UCL medical students, RAM now offers a conference bursary to help cover travel costs for students who have had their research accepted at a conference in the UK or abroad. The value of the bursary is up to £250. We hope this will help students to get to conferences they might otherwise not have been able to attend without financial help.

UCL Medical Students in any year can apply any time – please check out our ‘conference bursary’ tab for the application form and email at any time.

Summer Studentships: Applications opening soon

By | Research | No Comments

Our summer studentship applications are opening very soon. They offer the opportunity for UCL Medical students to take part in research either here at UCL or elsewhere. Our scheme offers students a grant of £400 to carry out a 4 week research project over the summer months. We have our own limited number of projects to apply to however, if you are interested in a particular area of research or medicine, try and email a professor or researcher in that field and ask if you can get involved. This does sound daunting, and if you’re stuck, have a look at our ‘useful links’ page for tips from our affiliated research society NSAMR on how to get involved in research. Good luck!

Workshops: Critical Appraisal

Professor David Bender, lecturer and researcher at UCL and a committee member of charity Health Watch, hosted a great workshop on how to appraise clinical research protocols, giving us an insight into the health watch student competition. We were delighted for the tips on publishing papers and the 10 top tips a research protocol could contain. Our section hopes to host some more workshops in the coming year.

Journal Club: Immunology

We hosted our first journal club session of the year aligned with the pre-clinical module of Infection and Defence, featuring a new and exciting paper on how HIV-1 evades innate immune recognition through specific cofactor recruitment. An interactive session hosted by Dr. Richard Milne, it was an opportunity to read, discuss and understand a really top class paper, and was very well-received – we learnt a lot about how data tells the story of scientific discovery and how basic science research can potentially lead to clinical applications! We are delighted to hear that more such sessions would be welcomed – in fact, we are planning to organise at least one journal club session for every module, so watch this space!

The Research and Academic Medicine Section are looking forward to a great new year. We have introduced a new conference bursary for 2017, and we are excited to offer 10 studentships for the summer. In addition, we will still be carrying out our speciality seminars and journal club, as well as hosting some workshops and careers events. Check our website and Facebook page for upcoming events and opportunities. We are hoping to expand our reach within the medical school and encourage you all to get involved in research in one way or another.
